Courtyard Garden — ’“Gardening for Wildlife” 2011/2012 project

The Royal Horticultural Society is launching a campaign to encourage more gardening for wildlife, the “Big Wildlife Garden”.  As part of the campaign there is a competition aimed at small projects being run by community groups and we would like to enter our Courtyard Garden. Do you have ideas to help encourage wildlife? Would you be interested in leading or volunteering with our entry? For more information see the Junior Church notice board.

Hot off the press!

St Mary’s Courtyard Garden has been recognised as an Area of Achievement in the Royal Horticultural Society judging of Moseley in Bloom.  At regional level the judges commented on the beautiful planting and the sunflower competition allowing children to participate. In the national competition it was noted that the space had been transformed into a ’safe and tranquil area for families and parents to meet and is a real asset.’

A big thank you to all those parents, children and parishioners who have helped to develop the Courtyard this year and to the promise of much more exciting work over the next 12 months as we focus on encouraging wildlife into the area.  Please see Becky Greenhill or Claire Stevens for more information on how you can help.

Collect

Almighty God you have knit together your elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord: grant us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living that we may come to those inexpressible joys that you have prepared for those who truly love you; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God now and for ever.

Thought for the day by Janet Thorne

Today we celebrate All Saints. Saints are quite unique, described in the dictionary as holy and worthy of veneration. To be saintly we must be very good, patient or unselfish people and full of good works. Recently we enjoyed the outing to Winchester where we heard quite a lot about saints or saintly people. I was most impressed by the visit to St Cross Hospital and Almshouse of Noble Poverty allegedly founded by Henry De Blois who became Bishop of Winchester in 1129. The story suggests that Henry was moved by a young girl, with whom he had a chance encounter, who begged him to help her family who were starving because of the civil war. As a result, the hospital was built on the site of a ruined religious house, where 100 poor men were fed each day and 13 provided with accommodation. It continues today and is now England’s oldest charitable institution.

Henry’s deeds were very saintly at that time. But now, nearly 900 years later, what about our deeds today? How generous and hospitable are we in our benefice? There are plenty of opportunities for us to be welcoming and friendly in our church communities. Special events, coffee and company, lunch club, Christmas day, Christmas fair, flower arrangements and refreshments after services. But these are the easy things. Could we do more? Have the needs changed significantly in all those years? How saintly are we and will we be remembered for our efforts?
