Collect
Almighty Father, whose will is to restore all things in your beloved Son, the King of all: govern the hearts and minds of those in authority, and bring the families of the nations, divided and torn apart by the ravages of sin, to be subject to his just and gentle rule; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
Thought for the day by Jennifer Holloway
As today is All Souls Day, it is good to set aside some time of remembrance for those known to us who have died. As Christians, we draw closer to Christ when we give thanks for their lives and remember all that they have meant to us. We are confident that they are now at rest and in the safety of God’s care.
For some, it will be an emotional time, possibly with memories that make us feel raw inside. Tears, anger, regret, sadness and aloneness are just some of the feelings that may be experienced. Conversely, others may feel relief that the end of suffering or a long life has finally brought eternal peace. These human reactions are all normal and gradually they will merge into acceptance and even celebration of good times remembered and enjoyed.
For Christians, today’s readings are especially relevant. Others you may wish to draw from include Psalm 139, Revelation 21:3-5 and 1 Corinthians 15:51-57.
Talk through your feelings with a trusted friend or relative, or to someone at Church. And use today to talk to God in your thoughts and prayers. God understands all our needs and is always there for us, wherever we are.
1 Thessalonians 4:14 — “For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen in their sleep”.
